Tyler Bates, the composer for John Wick and Guardians of the Galaxy, is tapped to score Deadpool 2. The sequel to 2016’s Deadpool, Deadpool 2 has already wrapped filming ahead of its release next year, which means that it is currently in the (long) process of editing, digital effects, and of course, scoring. With just under seven months until release, it’s right on schedule, despite the issue of the original director (Tim Miller) stepping down to direct another movie.
Director David Leitch took over from Miller on Deadpool 2, with most of the original cast returning for the sequel as well. Star Ryan Reynolds is obviously back as the Merc with a Mouth, along with Morena Baccarin as girlfriend Vanessa. Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) and Stefan Kapicic (Colossus) are also returning, alongside new faces Zazie Beetz as Domino, and Josh Brolin as Cable. This week, a composer has also joined the project: Tyler Bates.

Bates is now set to score Deadpool 2, according to a report from FMR. Composer Bates is known for his work on many other action and comic book films, including John Wick, Guardians of the Galaxy, Watchmen, and 300.
In addition to being very experienced with scoring action movies and comic book adaptations, Bates has already worked alongside Deadpool 2 director Leitch. The pair previously collaborated on John Wick (which Leitch co-directed with Chad Stahelski) and both worked on 300 – although with Leitch working on stunts, it’s not likely that the two actually spent any time together on that projectDeadpool composer Junkie XL (aka Tom Holkenborg) was originally set to return for the sequel, but he stepped down from Deadpool 2 earlier this year, as a gesture of respect for Miller. This may come as a disappointment to those fans who loved the work that Junkie XL did on the original film, but the composer’s decision is perfectly understandable, all things considered. While Leitch’s involvement may have played a part in getting Bates onboard for Deadpool 2, the composer’s style may have also suited the project well
Although the style of Deadpool 2 is sure to be a bit different than that of the original film, there’s little doubt that a composer like Bates is more than capable of creating an absolutely fantastic score for it. A comic book/action move is right in his wheelhouse, and he already knows the director, so it stands to reason that Bates will have little trouble delivering a Deadpool movie sequel score to remember.
